KATHMANDU: There are many people deprived of education, despite having a keen desire to study. Unable to incur the expenses required to purchase the educational materials including books, many have dropped out from schools or colleges, while many did not even start their formal education.

Realizing this condition of such people, Bookmandu Nepal, a non-profitable organisation in Swayambhu, has taken an initiative to collect and deliver old books to needy students. And the organisation is doing this work through the help of volunteers. Eleven college students are working as volunteers here. They collect used books from donors and deliver them to the needy students.

Suman Khatiwada, President of Bookmandu Nepal explained, “We want to develop the concept of sharing, exchanging and distributing used books rather than selling them at a few rupees.”

Khatiwada informed they would also utilise the unused pages of old note books. “We will collect such pages, stitch them together and make a new note book which will be provided to those needy students who are unable to afford it.”

According to Khatiwada the organisation has planned to make a functioning network of donors and receivers. It will also open a library targeting students with weak economic condition. Till now, Bookmandu Nepal has collected almost 500 books of various level — from primary to Master’s level. Anyone willing to help the organisation can donate books and can also work as volunteer at Bookmandu Nepal.
